Wallenius Wilhelmsen adopts TNFD LEAP framework to enhance maritime biodiversity considerations
Wallenius Wilhelmsen implements the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) guidance to manage our impacts on nature and biodiversity.

Wallenius Wilhelmsen’s mission is to lead the way to connected, sustainable supply chains. The company has a long legacy of sustainability actions and a track record of. caring for the environment.
To make sure that we manage our nature and biodiversity impacts and risks, we implemented the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD)’s LEAP (locate, evaluate, assess, and prepare) approach and did an impact assessment.
Embracing the TNFD LEAP framework helps us understand our footprint and interactions with sensitive areas in the oceansSustainability Manager
“By integrating nature-related risks and opportunities into our decision-making, we can create resilient businesses that thrive in harmony with biodiversity considerations," he adds.
Actively protecting biodiversity and improving ocean knowledge
As part of the assessment, a strong biodiversity strategy was developed. The strategy outlines several measures that the company will address.
Three overarching initiatives were identified: ‘Protect and avoid important ocean territories’, ‘Minimize impact on marine ecosystems’, and ‘Increase insights to restore ocean health’.
The focus of the strategy for our shipping operations is to avoid and reduce the impact and contribute positively with more knowledge about the ocean.
Concrete actions include:
- Reducing the risk of invasive species through ballast water management, biofouling management, and cargo inspection and treatment
- Avoid/minimize operations in biodiversity sensitive areas
- Reduce noise pollution and reduce risk of water spills
- Reduce air pollution though operational efficiency and by transitioning to alternative fuels.
- Engage with research institutions in need of ocean data, and other measures to increase ocean knowledge.
