Our vehicle logistics service receives Toyota Kaizen Excellence Award
The honour rewarded the Wallenius Wilhelmsen Solutions team for helping Toyota Canada to optimise its automotive transportation operations.
Our Canadian vehicle services business, which manages port processing activities, from working on vehicles to coordinating distribution, has been awarded the 2021 Toyota Kaizen Excellence Award for the fourth successive year.
At the Annacis vehicle processing center, we load Toyota vehicles with other OEMs for rail transport via the Canadian Pacific network. With mixed loads, Canadian Pacific could not identify or separate Toyota’s vehicles, which prevented Toyota Canada’s Parts and Vehicle Processing Center in Montreal from ordering parts ahead of the vehicles arriving. This in turn affected the centre’s throughput and production. It also raised challenges for Canadian Logistics Services which performs surveying for Toyota, as well as invoicing issues between Canadian Pacific and Toyota Canada.
To solve the problem of co-loading while maintaining operational effectiveness, we created a new unique destination code for Toyota only and retrained employees and the customer care team to use it, allowing railcars to be loaded exclusively for Toyota Canada.

The result was better visibility of Montreal-destined vehicles for Toyota while Canadian Pacific could easily identify Toyota loads and Canada Logistics Services enjoyed more efficient rail surveying.

Kaizen refers to the practice of continuous improvement and is a key tenet of the Toyota Production System. The awards recognise organisations that embrace the Kaizen model of focusing their efforts on small, continuous improvements to produce positive results on a larger scale.
