Meet the new head of sales in Sweden

Nikolai Nymoen is our newly appointed general manager, Sweden sales – and a career in the maritime industry has always been an ambition.

Nikolai Nymoen

Tell us a bit about your background Nikolai.

I joined Wallenius Wilhelmsen in Sweden 2010 before moving to Oslo in 2013 where I was part of the global commercial team. In 2017, I got the opportunity to move back to Gothenburg where I have been responsible for managing our largest customer accounts in Sweden. For me to now head up the Sweden sales organisation has been a clear goal since I first joined the company 10 years ago.

I’ve always wanted to work in the shipping industry – which was not a given considering I grew up in the countryside in Norway, far away from the closest port. My degree is in maritime business from the Solent University in Southampton, UK.

As the new general manager for sales in Sweden, what do you want to achieve in your first year in the job?

I want to maintain WW Ocean’s position as the number one deep-sea RoRo carrier of choice for our Swedish customers.

In Sweden we have a diversified customer base ranging from non-contractual spot customers to major global partners, across many different industries. Naturally, how we approach the different customers varies, but they are all equally important to our business. I aim to grow the breakbulk and spot market where we will be competitive on price but win on competence and service – providing true value to the customer.

Wallenius Wilhelmsen is also embarking on a journey to zero emissions and we need to team up with others, including our major customers, to meet this challenge. I do hope that our Swedish customers acknowledge the value this can create, and that they are keen on a collaborative approach in the months and years to come.

What do you think makes a great sales team?

To me trust is the foundation for success. Trust fosters loyalty and builds long-term relationships for the benefit of both parties. To get there, it requires a skilful salesforce that really knows its product in order to understand how to best apply that to the customer’s needs – preferably before the customers even realise they have a need.

What do you like most about working for Wallenius Wilhelmsen?

Some companies are very hierarchical. Here, from day one, even though I started in a junior position, I felt that I was seen and heard. You are empowered – and that motivates you. I also enjoy the occasional travel and daily contact with customers and colleagues across the world. I entered the shipping industry because it’s international and multicultural. Long-term, I can imagine taking on an assignment abroad – particularly in Asia, if the right opportunity arises.

In your spare time, what do you enjoy doing?

I have a young family, which keeps me busy. I do appreciate cooking, good food and a nice bottle of wine. When I get the chance, I enjoy cross-country skiing and outdoor activities in general.
