Innovative software improves visibility and efficiency at our terminals

First implemented in 2018, iTOMS, a cloud-based operating system, is now being used at most of our owned terminals around the world, saving shipping lines, truckers, OEMs and cargo owners time and money.

Responding to growing demand for visibility

The implementation of iTOMS is part of our digital supply-chain journey, which focuses on developing and deploying tools to better manage customers supply-chains.

The system’s dashboard gives a real-time view of cargo flow at our terminals. Truckers are able see gate information and are notified when their cargo is ready to be picked up, while shippers are able to see when their units have been discharged from a vessel.

Intelligent logistics increases operational efficiency

Equally important, iTOMS provides our terminal staff with the power of real-time information combined with the accessibility of a smartphone. Access to a smartphone allows them to capture particular services, such as washing, instantly and then determine which work orders are still outstanding leading to greater efficiency. In turn this helps them achieve better berth and yard management, leading to more efficient space utilisation and quicker vessel loading and unloading operations.

Different modules allow for the smooth running of various terminal processes.

The BMSB module being used at Zeebrugge, for instance, helps terminal staff to plan, follow up on and register cargo treatments and create certificates, which are then made available to customers via iTOMS.

The breakbulk module helps manage specific activities related to handling breakbulk cargo such as allowing units to be registered and monitored.

In addition, by automating many of the administrative functions that terminal staff perform on a daily basis, the highly configurable technology frees them up to focus on efficiency, quality, customer collaboration and safety.

With plans to roll the technology out at all our terminals, we are able to deliver the value of iTOMS to even more customers and suppliers.
